Is bare minerals good for a person with acne?

Dreamer ツ asked:

I have a little bit of acne, but alot of acne scars. I’ve heard bare minerals is great but i dont know if it would be best for me, I want it to be able to cover my acne scars and hopefully make my skin better. Should I try bare minerals or is there other makeup better for me ?

Mineral Makeup Brushes

 Mineral Makeup Brushes

The best mineral makeup would seem useless if it is not applied with the perfect brush. Mineral makeup brushes are very important because they allow full coverage and flawless application each time. Mineral makeup requires a special set of brush because its looseness is quite different from a regular makeup. So if you’re switching to the mineral variant, be sure to get the brush that works with it well.

Women usually buy a set of mineral makeup brushes and just discover the perfect use for each as they go along. With the whole set available to you, you could never go wrong during application. However, the most popular ones today are the Kabuki Brushes. These are the ones especially made for mineral makeup.

The big brush in the set are usually called the face brushes. They are used to dust the makeup on the forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, and elsewhere. its function is complemented by the blush brushes, which in turn, contours and highlights the cheek area. They are the flat, usually wide brimmed brushes.

The mineral makeup brushes that come in many forms are the eyeliner and eye shadow brushes. There are both thin and thick versions of an eyeliner brush so you can achieve the look that you want. The heavy brushes provides for the smoky eye look. As for the eye shadow brushes, they are available in several styles, shapes, and sizes so you can contour, cover, and color the eye area efficiently. They need to come in different types because every facial structure is different. Precision eye shadow brushes are needed to achieve a faultless look.

Mineral makeup brushes are a strong necessity for the simple fact that you can’t apply the makeup with your bare hands. If you want to look like you’ve just stepped out of an expensive salon, you must invest on the right brushes so you can create an almost perfect made-up look every time.

One of the hottest trends in make-up today is loose-powder mineral cosmetics. With brand names like “naked”, “bare” and “pure”, one would think that mineral makeup is one of the best products for your skin. To a point that’s true. Because many of the traditional additives in cosmetics – fragrance, filler, binders, synthetic dyes and preservatives – are not a part of mineral makeup, these new, “natural” cosmetics are easier on the skin, but don’t be fooled. According to WebMD, the major mineral components in this trendy new make-up “have been the basis of most makeup foundations for decades.” What’s more, many of the ingredients are actually synthetically formulated, which takes “nature” right out of the picture, in a manner of speaking.

Here’s the lowdown on the 4 most common “minerals” found in today’s hottest cosmetics:

Iron Oxide. More commonly known as rust, certain isotopes of iron oxide have been used since prehistoric times as pigments, paints and dyes. Different chemical configurations create different colors, most often red, brown, yellow and black tones. There is a large concentration of iron oxide on Mars, thus giving it the red hue, and the nickname “the red planet”. According to Wikipedia, however: “Iron oxides graded safe for cosmetic use are produced synthetically in order to avoid the inclusion of ferrous or ferric oxides, and impurities normally found in naturally occurring iron oxides.”

Nature’s minerals being replicated in a lab? Doesn’t sound very “natural” to me!

Titanium Dioxide. From paint, to sunscreen to food coloring, this naturally occurring substance has also been used in cosmetics for decades – primarily as a thickener and, more recently, for the SPF protection that it provides. Most dermatologists would agree, however that no matter the SPF, mineral makeup by itself is not enough sun protection for the skin of your face. Dermatologists recommend a minimum SPF rating of 25 for face protection. And never tuck yourself in at night without washing your face. No makeup is pure enough “to sleep in it”. Plus the recent concerns over the recent classification of titanium dioxide as a “group 2B carcinogen” have people reexamining the benefits of the mineral. This classification indicates that the mineral could be potentially carcinogenic to humans, as it has been found to cause cancer in rats that inhaled the particles.

As most mineral makeups are in a loose, powder form, it is unclear at this point if it will pose a future threat to humans. One of the biggest complaints regarding mineral makeup is the loose powder spillage and dispersion in the air during application. According to WebMD, however, the fine particulate matter of the makeup may pose other concerns. “Minerals like zinc and titanium are safe when applied to healthy skin but in a micronized nanoparticle form, there remains a concern, particularly when applied to damaged skin, or when inhaled”.

Mica. Though to be derived from an ancient word for “glitter”, mica’s light diffusing properties have made it a component in eye colors for decades. Highly heat resistant, mica has been prized for centuries and is the predominant component of the sun pyramid just outside of Mexico City. In mineral makeup, mica is used to reflect light, create a shimmering effect or to help disguise fine lines by “bending” light. Mica was extremely rare and prized throughout Europe during the 19th century. Now, mica is easily refined and is one of the truly natural minerals in cosmetics today.

Kaolin/ Kaolinite. This earthy clay hardens to a soft, chalk-like substance. This nearly white mineral is prevalent around the globe, and is another true mineral in mineral cosmetics. Because of the absorbent nature of clay, it adheres more uniformly to the contours of ****** skin and holds its position better than most liquid foundations. It is kaolin and other clays like it (some companies are using “Mediterranean” clay, commonly known as illite, which is a cousin to kaolinite) that gives mineral make-up the long lasting coverage for which it is popular.

So if you have to choose, mineral make-up is probably the lesser of all cosmetic evils, and even a great choice for people with acne-prone skin. The clay helps to absorb excess oils, and gives a “flawless” professional finish with even coverage. One mineral to steer clear of, however is bismuth oxychloride. While this element is technically a mineral, it does not occur naturally, and “Bismuth is a byproduct of lead and copper processing” according to the experts at WebMD. It is strongly cautioned that people with sensitive skin, rosacea or chronic acne avoid this ingredient, as it “is considered a skin irritant and can cause itching and rashes and in large amounts it can cause cystic acne.”

For normal to oily skin, nature’s minerals are a blessing, but for dry/sensitive skin, heavy applications of mineral makeup can be too drying on the skin, emphasizing fine lines and “weighing down” the skin’s appearance. A simple trick to improve the coverage without applying a second coat? Mist your face to add a bit of moisture before applying the makeup, and consider using a less diffuse applicator brush. The smaller the brush, the heavier and more direct the coverage. As technology and testing catches up with this cosmetic trend, watch for mineral makeup that is actually proven suitable for sensitive skin. It’s only a matter of time.

How do you curl your hair with a revlon perfect heat ceramic straightener?

I just bought a Revlon Perfect Heat straightener because my old flat iron didnt work, how can i curl my hair with it, cause its not working like i thought it would.

1.Brush clean, dry hair to remove any tangles or knots.

2. Section hair by dividing the front into two portions and leaving the back free. Clip the two front portions up and out of the way using your hair clips.

3.Spray the entire back portion of your hair with the heat protectant spray. Brush through to evenly distribute the product.

4.Select a vertical, 1-inch piece of hair. Hold the hair securely in one hand and your flat iron in the other.

5.Open the flat iron and place your hair between the plates, 2 inches from the scalp. Clamp the iron closed.

6.Rotate the hair 180 degrees or 3/4 of a turn in the direction you'd like the curl to go. Aim to curl away from the face. For example, curl to the right for your right side and to the left for your left side.

7.Hold the flat iron vertical and pull down toward the tip, sliding the iron down the entire length of the hair. Release the clamp slowly once your reach the end.

8.Repeat Steps 3 to 7 for your entire head then apply a glossing pomade to the curls for added shine and definition.
hope this helps! i always curl my hair like this!

its a hair straightener, you can make it only straight, if you want curls you need to purchase a curling iron

Celebrate National No Make-Up Day on March 24 by going cosmetics free. Lisa Haynes reveals how to take a break from your make-up bag it was the picture on Twitter that was rumoured to cause a rift between newlyweds Katy Perry and Russell Brand… not evidence of an affair or an incriminating act but an early-morning image of the singer without a scrap of make-up for all to see.

The snap was swiftly deleted from the social networking site.

From red carpet to stage, Perry is rarely seen without her heavily-painted face and the impromptu posting might just have been seen a step too far.

for many a make-up junkie, the thought of going bare-faced is akin to walking to the shops naked to buy a pint of milk.

A staggering 98% of women say they can’t live without make-up, according to a recent survey of 3,500 people by the Vitality Show.

But if there’s one occasion when you could step out proudly without the warpaint and put a self-imposed ban on your cosmetics shelf, it’s National No Make-Up Day on March 24.

“We are so used to the artificial beauty that we see on television and in magazines that it is nice to be reminded that fresh, glowing natural skin can be beautiful too,” says Laura Rudoe of Evolve Beauty.

so step away from the mascara wand and leave your lippy behind for the day. Marvel at just how good you can look without your make-up.

:: Bare-faced cheek There’s no denying that make-up can accentuate our features and make us feel alive in the mornings but cosmetics, especially in excess, can also have a detrimental effect on the skin.

Rudoe believes going make-up free every so often can be beneficial for our complexions. “Women apply an average of 515 chemicals to their bodies every day. why not give your skin a chance to detox by seeing what you can live without?” she suggests.

“Giving skin a breather from clogging foundation can also help reduce blocked pores, which can lead to skin breakouts. The other bonus to going make-up free is time saved that you can spend on your beauty sleep!”

thorough cleansing is your first step to a flawless complexion. it removes surface dirt and bacteria and prevents the imperfections that women feel they need to cover up.

If you haven’t got time for the ritual cleanse, tone and moisturise, vanish away traces of your make-up grime with cleansing wipes to remove in one clean sweep.

:: Less is more Going make-up free doesn’t mean you have to ditch all your everyday products.

Your skin is your blank canvas and moisturiser is the key to looking radiant minus the slap.

“Everyone knows the difference regular moisturising can make, but few people recognise the importance of matching your moisturiser to your skin type,” advises Sarah Brown from Pai skincare, skincare expert at the Vitality Show.

“To keep your skin smooth and conditioned, it’s also important to moisturise from within. Increase your intake of Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3, 6 & 9) – oily fish, seeds and nuts are all good sources.

“If your diet is lacking these foods then it’s worth investing in some natural supplements.”

There are other shortcuts you can take to look preened without the product haul. use a multi-use natural product like Trilogy’s everything Balm (trilogyproducts.com) or Jurlique’s Love Balm (jurlique.co.uk) to tame eyebrows, condition lashes and use as a lip balm.

:: Au naturel If the thought of going make-up free is already giving you withdrawal symptoms, cheat!

A barely-there look is bang on trend – backstage at Fashion Week creative teams regularly opted for a mascara-free look along with super-glossy complexions and mannequin nails that mimicked skin colour.

Sarah-Jane Froom, national make-up artist for Bare Escentuals, has this step-by-step guide to creating a no make-up look to keep everyone guessing…

:: Firstly, it’s essential to prep and prime the skin. Ensure skin is hydrated by applying a moisturiser and then follow with a foundation primer. If you get the base right, the rest of your make-up will fall into place effortlessly.

:: Conceal any dark circles, redness around the nose, chin, brows and lids, and any other areas that need coverage.

:: Buff a natural mineral foundation over the rest of the complexion. Your skin will look like your own but on a really good day, giving you the coverage you might need but without looking heavy or ‘cakey’.

:: create perfectly sculpted cheekbones, which can be achieved using a mineral complexion enhancer such as bareMinerals Warmth.

:: The ultimate final touch is a mineral finishing product (I use bareMinerals Mineral Veil) to hide the appearance of open pores and fine lines and keep the complexion looking fabulous all day long.

:: Finish the look with beautifully groomed brows, curled lashes, subtle mascara, a pop of blush and a slick of your favourite lip balm or gloss.

Tried & tested Keep your pout plump but natural with a shimmering neutral lipstick. Our testers put three lippies through their paces.

:: L’Oreal Paris Made for Me Naturals in Organza 236, £8.16 (0800 030 4032) A very moisturising formula but I felt I needed a lip pencil to contain the colour and it faded quite quickly. A lovely subtle shade that’s better suited to daytime.

3/5 :: Lancome L’Absolu Nu in Beige Sienne 205, £19.50 (lancome.co.uk) available April 1.

Looked much more matte in the case than on my lips. The subtle shimmering particles made my pout look fuller, and once patted down it was a gorgeous natural shade.

4/5 :: Shiseido Shimmering Rouge in Lounge RD709, £19.99 (0207 313 4774) Glided on extremely well with a smooth application. A flattering neutral colour and the slight sparkle makes it a versatile shade for evening as well as day time.

4/5 Buy it now go safari chic on your travels this summer. Alice Temperley has collaborated with Elemis to create the Safari Traveller limited edition luxury kits for him, £50, and her, £79. The fabulous animal print set is available exclusively at John Lewis until March 27 (johnlewis.com) and nationwide from may at timetospa.co.uk Beauty bulletin :: Celeb gallery A host of celebrities and fashion designers have been putting their lippies to good use to create one-off pieces of art for charity. Pixie Lott, Eliza Dolittle and Barbara Hulanicki are amongst those who have used Max Factor’s Lipfinity Lip Tint pens to create pout-themed pictures for Macmillan Cancer Support. The collectable Kiss Art collection will be available on eBay’s charity site from March 28 at ebay.co.uk/ebayforcharity to raise funds for Macmillan.

:: Recessionista alert Even toothbrushes have got Royal wedding fever! Oral-B is brightening up the nation’s mouths for the big day with a limited edition ‘cool Britannia’ box. Product I Love: BareMinerals Makeup

1302847305 77 Product I Love: BareMinerals Makeup

I am one of those people who when I find something I really like, or makes me feel really good, or works really well, I stick with it.  Yes, I am always willing to try new things, but I will never forget or completely give up those things that are tried and true.  in honor of this, I would like to introduce a new “feature” in which, on a semi regular basis, I discuss some products, brands or items that throughout the years, I have found myself to come to love.

Bare Minerals Makeup

I actually feel a little weird writing about this, as I don’t usually like to promote makeup or beauty products that I use. I figure, to each, their own.  However, this particular line of makeup, particularly the foundations, completely changed how I feel about makeup, and myself.  you see, growing up, I hated makeup.  actually, it wasn’t that I hated it, I simply didn’t understand how it worked.  There was no one who taught me how to apply it, how much to use, what colors to stay away from, etc.  thus, after a few disastrous attempts, I decided makeup wasn’t for me.  I spent all my high school and college years never wearing makeup, save for a bit of mascara here and there (the one piece of makeup that is pretty straightforward on how to wear it).  I was relatively lucky, as my skin, though sensitive, was relatively clear and easy to keep clear.  still, I was camera shy, as I hated how splotchy it looked in pictures, and I never really felt….confident.

After I graduated college and moved out to California I actually started experiencing issues with my skin.  I am not sure if it was the climate change, or if at 22 my skin had finally decided to enter puberty (which I skipped during my younger years), but I started experiencing small breakouts, oily spots right next to dry spots, and uneven skin tone.  I hated the way I always looked pale, yet splotchy.  I completely avoided having my picture taken.  My confidence plummeted.  no matter what I did, whether it was diet, exercise, vitamins, creams, or toners, none of it worked.  I thought about trying makeup, but it terrified me.  I didn’t like the “fake caked on look” so many girls had.  I wanted it to look like I wasn’t wearing any makeup, that I had a perfectly flawless complexion, naturally.  I figured I would never find that.

Then, one day in 2008 I happened upon the Bare Escentuals store at Westfield Shopping Center in San Francisco.  Mineral makeup you say?  I had never heard of it, but the pretty storefront sucked me in.  I walked through the door and was immediately overwhelmed.  Powders and brushes and makeup everywhere!  I had no clue what to do or where to begin.  one of the sales ladies clearly saw this and swooped in to save the day.

“are you looking for anything in particular, Miss?”

“Ummm, well, uh…actually I don’t wear makeup, like ever, but I would like to learn, and I really hate how liquid foundation looks, and I am lazy and it is a pain to apply, and I want to be able to finish my makeup in 5 minutes, and I want it to look natural, but pretty, and help even out my skin tone, but my skin is really sensitive…”

“you came to the right place then.”

Five minutes later she had swirled, tapped and buffed my face into perfection.  I was astounded.  it felt so light and breathable.  Where was the caked feeling?  the clogged pores?  the annoying shine that most makeup seemed to give you?

“this is too good to be true.  I will never be able to do this at home.”

“Can you flex your wrist?”

“Well of course I can.”

“Then you can do it.  Swirl, tap and buff.  that is all you need to remember.”

I was still skeptical, but I was willing to give it a try.  After all, it had taken her less than 5 minutes to find a shade that matched me and apply it until I looked as though I had the most flawless complexion.  I bought my first container of foundation right then and there.  actually, I purchased the bareMinerals Get Started Kit, which included three brushes, two half size containers of foundation (two different shades to try), a powder that would add warmth to the face, and a translucent powder that helped to set the makeup and keep it fresh looking.  it only cost me $60.  the brushes alone were worth at least $70.  I still buy the kit when it is time to replace my brushes (every year or so) because it is the best deal.

When I got home that evening I was pretty sure I was not going to be able to recreate what had been done earlier.  it was going to be money wasted.  but I would never know until I tried.  I took a shower, washed my face clean of my pretty complexion, moisturized, and hoped for the best as I broke out the foundation and the brushes.

Approximately 5 minutes later I had the beautiful complexion that the magical sales lady had given to me.  only this time, I had done it all on my own.  She was correct, all I needed to remember was to swirl, tap and buff.

Since that day I have never looked back.  Over the past three years I have had more compliments on my skin and looks than in the previous 22 years.  People tell me how lucky I am to have such a fantastic complexion.  I pull them close and tell them my secret.  they don’t believe me at first, but I reassure them, give it a try, you never know what may happen.

Swirl, tap and buff, it is as easy as that.  Applying my foundation takes no more than 5 minutes, and it looks virtually flawless every time.  it provides a natural look (most people don’t even realize I am wearing makeup), with medium coverage, which is ideal for me since my skin is a bit uneven in tone, but not riddled with scars or blemishes.  you can wear less, if you prefer, or you can make it heavier.  regardless, it always feels light, and as though my skin can actually breath.  I only have to touch up once a day, and generally only around the creases of my nose and my chin.  Because I use the “matte” version, I don’t experience any excessive shine, and if it does get a bit shiny by the end of the day, I just apply a light layer of powder to soak it up.  it lasts all day, and looks as good at 8pm as it did at 9am.  And the best part of it, as the years go on, I actually have found my skin to be healthier as I use it.  My skin tone has actually evened out a bit, my pores have shrunk, and those super sensitive areas I used to have, they can withstand a little bit more now.

Most importantly, I now feel more confident when I look in the mirror.  I let people take pictures of me.  I smile and laugh more.  it helped to give me the self-confidence I always wanted to have, but never managed to.  For that, I will remain forever faithful to this product and return to it time after time.

My Foundation Routine Includes:

bareVitamins Skin Rever-Upper ($21)bareVitamins Prime Time Foundation Primer ($21)bareMinerals Matte SPF 15 Foundation in “Fair” ($28)*bareMinerals Mineral Veil in Original ($19)Flawless Application Face Brush ($22)Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush ($20)Full Flawless Application Face Brush ($28)

*Note: a large size of the foundation is approximately .2 ounces, and though that does not sound like a lot, wearing it every day, with a medium coverage level, it lasts me approximately 2 months.

Please Note: these posts are not meant to promote any particular brands, or persuade you to buy/use them (they may include links, but I will NEVER profit off of them).  Rather, it is something I found myself reflecting on with a friend and thought that it could make for an interesting series.  I know I find myself curious what kinds of products/brands other people use, and why they started using them, so I figure you might too.  And if you don’t, well then that is ok too!

Do you have a foundation that you love and use regularly, or are you still searching for the perfect one?

Bailey asked:

My skin is very sensitive and the bare minerals was fine but the brushes actually irritated my skin, they’re so hard and itchy. Are there any other brushes that can be used? Preferably softer ones.

1302760887 51 Can I apply Bare Minerals eye makeup with brushes not made by Bare Minerals?

I heard that those brushes are made for mineral makeup and other brushes don't work with mineral makeup especially bare minerals.

You can use any brush, Its called marketing. Lol any kabuki brush with work for the powder, and for the shadows any brush will also work!

Any brush will work. you could apply it with your fingers if you wanted, it's not illegal.

Can I apply Bare Minerals eye makeup with brushes not made by Bare Minerals?

1302328879 44 Laura Mercier: New Lip Gel Colours and Baked Eye Colours Swatches and ReviewLaura Mercier also came out with 6 limited edition Lip Gel Colour shades.  these retail for $22USD and can be found at at Macy’s and Nordstroms counters or on Laura Mercier’s website. They are described as ” innovative gel-based lipstick will cushion your lips in soft-comfort colour with a shine finish”.

Taken with flash. Each of the swatches were done with 3-4 swipes to build up the color.

Sweet Cherry is a medium red with a shiny finish.
Rosette is a red pink shade that’s somewhat opaque on the lips.
Clementine is the most opaque color out of the entire collection. it is a medium orange that I think many orange lipstick lovers will gravitate towards.
Hibiscus Bloom is a watermelon pink that was really pretty on me.  it instantly brightened up my face.
Dollface is a cool tone blue pink. This color took at least 3 swipes to be fully opaque.
Berry Sorbet is a medium berry that’s very pretty. it doesn’t take too many layers to show up.

Last weekend, they had brand new testers out of these beauties and I tried Hibiscus Bloom on to test out the texture.  I first thought “ok here goes another sheer lipstick” but was fortunately proven wrong.  The color showed up pretty well on my lips and it felt so light, moisturizing, and comfortable. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I actually love the feel of these more compared to Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine.  The Lip Gel Colour would be best to wear on a hot summer day, where you don’t want to feel like your lipstick is melting.  I don’t know how long the wear time is but this is certainly one of those swipe-and-go products.  I also didn’t notice any strong or annoying fragrance from these either.

Here they are again without flash:

Laura Mercier also introduces a new “Eye Colour formula featuring Baked technology in beautiful shades that last all day. This smudge resistant, lightweight eye colour gently smoothes onto the lid for an even application”.  there are 6 shades for you to choose from and these retail at $22USD a piece.

Now I will say that my swatches do not do these eyeshadows any justice. They are much more vibrant, shimmery, and beautiful in person.  My camera had a tough time capturing the different color shimmers in each shade since the sun was setting.

Each of the shadows is baked in a round shape.  it sits inside a very simple clear plastic package.  The texture is smooth and has great pigmentation.  You can either use these dry or wet, with wet helping the color become darker and more vibrant (a foiled effect).

Ballet Pink is easily my favorite color. it is a frosty champagne with a hint of pink.  it goes on so smooth and the color is simply gorgeous.  I can imagine this being used as a highlighter in the inner corner/cheekbones as well.  it is currently the only sold out color online.

Here is it without flash:

With flash:

Terracota is like its name, a frosty and shimmery bronzy shade. This would make a nice lid or crease color.
Petal Pink is a pink with violet shimmer that reminds me so much of the pink shade in Chanel’s Enigma Quad.

Black Karat is a black/olive base with lots of gold shimmer.  This would make an outstanding smokey eye combo. it also reminds me of a better, more shimmery version of the olive/green shade in Chanel’s Enigma Quad.

Lagoon is a bright aqua/teal with shimmer.
Black Violet looks gorgeous in the pan but when swatch, it was actually the most flat in terms of color and shimmer compared to the other shades. I’m sure it will look much better when used wet.

I find the texture of these eyeshadows similar to Chanel’s Euro formulas where the shadows are baked.  They are smooth and easy to apply.

Overall, a huge thumbs up to Laura Mercier for the new Lip Gel Colours and Baked Eye Colours.  At $22 a piece, the lipsticks provide shine, color, and moisture. I don’t think you can ask for more than that! these are also alternatives to Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine with a lower price point. I definitely hope she will release more shades in the future. as for the eyeshadows, if you don’t want to pay $35USD for a single Chanel baked eyeshadow, these beauties are definitely good alternatives to check out. I highly recommend checking these out at your local Laura Mercier counters!

What’s catching your eyes? Have you tested these new products out yet?
