1298703660 23 Plano based J.C. Penney reports solid year end results and expects momentum to continue

J.C. Penney Co. posted a 36 percent fourth-quarter profit increase and unveiled a $900 million share repurchase program on Friday.

The Plano-based department store chain said new exclusive merchandise by Liz Claiborne is attracting new customers.

While its full-year 2011 forecast exceeds analyst estimates, Penney’s first-quarter guidance was weaker than expected, sending shares down more than 6 percent to close at $34.16 Friday.

During a conference call with analysts, chairman and chief executive Myron “Mike” Ullman skipped his prepared comments because he’s recovering from a traffic accident that left him with some “bruises and minor injuries.” But he answered several questions from analysts.

Cotton and labor costs are forecast to go up this year, and Penney can better weather “price headwinds” with its private-label brands than with national brands, Ullman said. Penney’s Arizona and St. John’s Bay brands each have annual sales of more than $1 billion.

The Modern Bride fine jewelry departments that were launched in time for Valentine’s Day got off to a strong start, Penney said. As the year progresses, Liz Claiborne merchandise will be added to home, petite women’s apparel, activewear, swimwear and dresses. Penney will also add MNG by Mango fashions to more stores and add 75 Sephora shops to its stores this year for a total of 300.

Penney also plans to offer more discounts to its 26 million loyalty program customers.

To protect profits, Penney is using some of its $650 million capital spending budget this year on sophisticated markdown timing tools that it said will help offset the impact of higher production costs.

Stock buybacks have been popular among retailers this earnings season. Kohl’s Corp. and Gap Inc. also said they would repurchase shares.

Penney’s board, which added activist investor William Ackman and Vornardo Realty Trust chairman Steven Roth this month, approved the share buyback program. Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management and Vornado announced in October that they had acquired a 27 percent stake in Penney.

For the fourth quarter, which ended Jan. 29, Penney reported a profit of $271 million, or $1.13 a share, up from $200 million, or 84 cents a share, a year earlier. Earnings from continuing operations rose to $1.09 from 84 cents.

Analysts forecast earnings of $1.08 a share on revenue of $5.7 billion.

Fourth-quarter total sales increased 2.8 percent to $5.7 billion, and stores in the Southeast had the best gains.

Internet sales were up 6.7 percent in the fourth quarter to $495 million. Penney said it wants to expand its jcp.com online sales in the double digits this year.

2010 catalog sales were $454 million.

For the year, Penney reported a profit of $389 million, or $1.63 a share, on sales of $17.76 billion compared with a profit of $251 million, or $1.08 a share, on revenue of $17.56 billion in 2009.

For the first quarter, Penney said it expects earnings of 18 to 23 cents a share, including 3 cents for debt renewal and other restructuring charges. Penney has said that it will close five department stores and 19 outlet stores, including one at Grapevine Mills. Analysts had forecast earnings of 31 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters.

For 2011, Penney projected total sales to rise in the low single digits, generating earnings of $2 to $2.10 a share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast a profit of $1.75 a share on sales of $18.12 billion, up 2 percent from 2010.

7 Makeup Tips to Steal From Kim & Kourtney Kardashian

When we first heard that Kim and Kourtney Kardashian were filming a new reality show in new York City, we wondered if the sisters, who are known for sporting a smoky eye everywhere from the airport to the nail salon, would tone down their Hollywood-glam look while residing on the more understated east coast.

PHOTOS: Kourtney and Kim hit the big AppleBut after watching the premiere of Kourtney & Kim Take new York on Sunday night, it appears that more is still more when it comes to their makeup…and we think that’s a good thing since the girls looked pretty freaking fabulous (even at the gym!). Here, the Kardashians NYC makeup artist, Troy Surratt, reveals their secrets: 1. Play up all of your features. “The Kardashian sisters know the power of glam and aren’t afraid to accentuate and capitalize on every feature,” Surratt tells UsMagazine.com. that means paying attention to your eyes, cheeks and lips instead of just focusing on one of them. 2. Make friends with foundation. many girls avoid foundation because they think it looks fake, says Surratt, but the right formula and technique will give your skin a flawless appearance. first, apply a lightweight gel-cream base like Dior DiorSkin Nude Natural Glow Crème-Gel ($48, sephora.com) with a foundation brush. then, pat it into your skin with a makeup sponge. 3. Warm up your skin. when applying bronzer, create a triangle shape by blending it around your hairline (at the temples), on your cheekbones and down to your chin. “This draws all of the light to the center of your face,” says Surratt who recommends Shiseido Oil-Free Bronzer ($35, nordstrom.com).4. Enhance your bone structure. Smile and add a pop of pink blush to the fullest area of your cheek. then, dab a shimmery highlighter over the blush as well as on your cheekbones to make them look more prominent. Surratt uses Dolce & Gabanna The Blush Luminous Cheek Colour in Provocative ($44, saksfifthavenue.com) with Mally Beauty in Life is Lighter ($40, mallybeauty.com).5. Fake it. “False eyelashes are like beams of sunlight emitting from your eyes,” says Surratt, who notes that Kim frequently wears them to make her eyes look big and bright. “Long, full lashes are flirtatious and feminine.” 6. Soften smoky eyes. Ever wonder how the Kardashians manage to pull off a smoky eye in the afternoon? “I rim the inner and upper lash lines with Stila Kajal pencil in black, then I blend a rich brown eye shadow over the liner to make it warmer and softer,” Surratt tells us. 7. Line your lips. when you’re doing a nude lip, you should always define your mouth first with a pencil, says Surratt. “Otherwise, your lips will disappear into your skin.” He uses Kevyn Aucoin The Flesh Tone Lip Pencil ($24, kevynaucoindirect.com) topped with LipFusion Color Shine gloss ($38, sephora.com) on Kourtney and Kim.

Whos Afraid of the Department Store Makeup Lady?

Hell to the no.

Tell me you’ve been in my shoes …

You excitedly agree to a makeup session at one of the cosmetic counters in your local department store, only to walk out 30 minutes later in clownface, frantically rubbing off all the excess blush and bright blue eyeshadow on your face as you exit.

Or? You’d love some new tips, but you’re so appalled by the heavily made-up cosmeticians at every makeup counter around you in the store that you question the quality of advice they’d give out.

The question I’m asking today is … WHY?

I mean, I’ve grown used to seeing ridiculous makeup in magazines and cosmetic advertisements.

Sure, celebrities and models look interesting with metallic green shadow up to their brow lines and strategically placed glitter blush on their faces … but let’s be honest: that stuff doesn’t fly in the car rider pick-up line. Or on a date night with your husband or boyfriend. Or … pretty much anywhere.

So why haven’t the department store makeup girls gotten the memo?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone into a store seeking out someone, anyone at one of the counters that I’d trust with my makeup questions — and how many times I’ve left, scared out of my wits by the overdone makeup I’ve seen on all of their faces.

If these “experts” can’t achieve a pretty and natural look on their own faces, then how on earth can I be expected to trust them with mine?

What I don’t understand is why cosmetics companies aren’t insisting that their saleswomen showcase natural, wearable looks on their own faces. They’d sell SO MUCH MORE makeup that way!

Seriously, if there were a makeup counter where all of the women’s faces were flawless, I’d be their most loyal customer. instead, I’ve found that most of the makeup women look like extras on Dynasty. and I’m ready for an update.

Are you with me on this? Or am I out of line?

Is it worth buying a bare minerals brush?

1298185296 93 Is it worth buying a bare minerals brush?

I was going to get the starter kit for $60 but then I realized I don't need any of the extra stuff! all I wanted was the foundation and that is pretty much it. the lady at the store told me I should get the kit, but I am not really into makeup and am not going to wear it all the time. my next question is should I get the flawless finish brush? It is $28 to buy, but I don't see why I can't go to CVS and get a brush for $10?

I have to say, get the more expensive brush. Even if you are not really into makeup it will help you a lot.
Cheaper brushes are not always made with the best material and can build up oils and bacteria faster. Which wouldn'tt be good for your skin. They also usually fall apart faster. the brush fibers will fall out often and pretty quickly after you buy them and will cling to your face and get on your make up. Then when your trying to take off the little brush hairs from your face you can mess up your makeup. Even if makeupisn'tt really your thing, it can get really frustrating!

1298098899 92 In Her Makeup Bag: Bare Minerals My initial thoughts (Prepare for a long one!)Hey everyone!
First off, I’m sorry this is so late.  I meant to have it up the day or two after Christmas, but a couple things ended up getting in the way: 1) I realized I wanted to do a little comparison between the Bare Minerals and my Maybelline Mineral Power powder foundation, and 2) we went out of town for a few days.  I’m home now, though, so I wanted to share this with you ASAP!

My sister got me the Bare Minerals 8-piece customizable starter kit for Christmas, which gives you:
-the choice of one full-sized foundation (0.28oz, either matte or original finish) in your shade
-a smaller sized Mineral Veil (0.07oz)
-Warmth all-over color (0.05oz)
-Full Flawless Face brush
-Flawless Application Face brush
-Maximum Coverage Concealer brush
-mini-sized Prime Time foundation primer (0.5oz),
It also comes with a DVD that explains everything about the makeup, which I haven’t watched yet.

I suggested her just getting me the full-sized foundation and Mineral Veil, but she surprised me with this.  She really loves the concealer brush and wanted me to be able to try it, too.
For this review I’m just going to go over each individual product and tell you what I think about them so far.

The brushes:Top to bottom: full Flawless face brush (what you use to ‘buff’ in the foundation), Flawless Application face brush (for Mineral Veil/other powders), Maximum Coverage concealer brush

I’m not sure if when you buy the brushes individually the handles are longer, but these brushes are all travel-sized.  The full Flawless face brush (I’ll just call it the foundation brush) is about the length of my entire hand laid flat.  The powder brush is the smallest in length, with the concealer brush being skinnier and just a little longer.  Now, I had heard these brushes were on the scratchier side from brush comparison posts I’d read.  for other powder foundation/powder product applications I use my EcoTools Bamboo Bronzer brush, which is one of the softest things I’ve ever felt.  Comparing the two brands, these are definitely scratchier, however they aren’t overly so and I do like the way they work.  My EcoTools brush IS great for buffing in powder foundation, but it’s a pain to travel with and for other powders, it buffs them in too much.  It’s perfect for when I need  a light application of bronzer, but not when I want high pigmentation.  I really like how the Bare Minerals powder brush applies things like highlighters.  I just got the MAC too Chic beauty powder (post coming soon!), and it actually shows up well as compared to when I use my EcoTools Bamboo Bronzer brush, which buffs it in too much. The concealer brush is a new favorite!  My sister was right.  Now, I’ve never really used a brush for concealer, but my sister told me she uses a lighter shade of Bare Minerals as a spot concealer and loves this brush for it.  I’ve been using mine in the same way and this brush works really well.
The ProductsLeft: travel-sized Prime Time, right: Fairly Medium foundation (Original SPF 15 finish)
Left: Original Mineral Veil (0.07oz), right: Warmth all-over color (0.05oz)
The foundation: I tried the Fairly Medium shade along my jawline while at Sephora, and I thought it would be a perfect match.  However, I’ve used it a few times and I’m going to go back today and see if I can do a darker shade.  It’s not terribly light, but I know as soon as spring comes I’ll get darker and I’ll need to rely on bronzer.  As far as the formula goes, I love it.  keep in mind my skin is normal-dry and sensitive, and for foundation I look for something light-medium coverage, mainly to cover up mild redness and acne spots.  this evens out my skin tone perfectly and gives my skin a nice “glow”, especially after using the Mineral Veil.  It doesn’t cover up my acne spots enough, which is why I use the concealer brush to dab it over them.  The one downside is that this doesn’t last all day- you’d need a fuller coverage concealer if you care more about the staying power.
Prime Time: The only primer-type of product I’ve tried is the Monistat Anti-Chafing gel.  I’ve never really felt the need for a primer, though, so I didn’t use it very much.  I’ve been using Prime Time since I got this set, and so far I like it.  I’m kind of basing this off of what my sister has told me her problems are with Bare Minerals- that it doesn’t last all day on her oilier skin.  I think using Prime Time would really benefit her over me.  I have no problems with the foundation wearing all day on me since I’ve been using this.  However, it doesn’t make my skin feel oily/greasy which I like.
Original Mineral Veil: I’ve heard so many raves about this product, so I was so interested in trying this! It’s translucent, but it does give your skin a little extra “something”, and nicely finishes the foundation.  The only thing I worry about is it leaving the smallest white cast- I usually wear some kind of bronzer highlighter on top of it so I haven’t noticed it yet, but I also haven’t really taken pictures or anything since using it.
Warmth All-Over Face Color: Dislike.  It’s definitely too dark for my skin tone (I’m sorry I forgot to swatch this, I can do that if anyone would like!).  It’s hard to buff in and makes my cheeks look reddish, which is one of the primary reasons I wear face makeup at all.  this is probably because it’s too dark for me, but anyway, it will probably go in the trash or to my friend who’s darker.
Overall: I really like Bare Minerals and I’m so happy my sister got it for me to try.  It’s perfect for someone like me, who wants something lightweight and easy.  this set is really nice because it allows you to try out all their top-selling products- unfortunately for me, the Warmth color will go unused, but I think anyone darker will find it works better (I’m around a MAC NC25 for reference).  otherwise, I love the foundation, Prime Time, and Mineral Veil, as well as the brushes (even though they aren’t as soft as my EcoTools).  They work really well and are SO convenient to travel with!
Whew!  I was going to include a comparison to my Maybelline Mineral Power powder foundation too, but seeing how long this is I’ll save it for another post.  Hope this is helpful for any of you considering Bare Minerals!
