Cows return to Burlington

1272661271 24 Cows return to Burlington

Nothing peculiar sits inside Jackie Mangione’s studio — except for a cow.

The lofty white space contains painting supplies, industrial lighting and a life-size fiberglass cow erected in the middle.

After submitting a 12-inch proposal for the Cows Come Home to Burlington project, a community art project to be displayed on Church Street in Burlington from May through September, local painter Mangione was chosen to participate.

At the close of the exhibition, the cows, the muses of 35 local artists, will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger.

Painted cows as public, interactive art have been parading the street of cities around the globe.

“I just love the idea that it was a public opportunity, an interactive fun event, that is linked to the fundraiser.  This happens all over the world,” Mangione said.

Raised in New York, Mangione became a resident of Burlington after receiving an education at the Pratt Institute.

She said that she is particularly fond of the natural environment Vermont offers, which serves as inspiration for her work with watercolors, acrylic and silk.

“I just feel fortunate — this beautiful place, who would want to leave this beautiful place?” she said. “There is a nice consciousness, an environmental consciousness about our state.”

At an early age, Mangione would rummage through her older sister’s makeup.

In her room she would turn lipstick, mascara and bright nail polishes into paint, her preferred medium.

It was then that she began to receive attention for her artistic impulse.

Her ability to capture the forms, textures and rich colors of nature go beyond canvas.

Mangione created hand painted silk scarves after teaching classes at a summer camp, Camp Common Ground.

“I think the way that paints moves on fabric is an attraction for me.

The water flows, a natural kind of take to it,” Mangione said.

This natural flow makes its way onto the cow, affectionately named Moonique.

A veteran to donating and creating art for charitable causes, Mangione recently painted a chair to benefit programs sponsored by Recycle North.

Even in what she described as a small action, it allowed her to give back to the Burlington community.

The painted scene upon the cow is Mangione’s interpretation of the French Rococo style painter, Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting of the town of Louveciennes, France.

The scenes are dripping in romance, and come to life with Mangione’s preferred colors, creating a light that illuminates the cow.

Magione looks forward to the cow debuting on Church Street and its place both as an artistic piece and a plaything for a curious child.

Maybelline Haul

1272641522 39 Maybelline Haullol. eek. i didn’t know the :) would show up everywhere else other than my profile. hehehe… thank you for catching that. i changed it back to “jannie” already. i would not want to have no name at all. oh yeah, i noticed your userpic is back on my list of followers instead of the blank pic saying aly4realz. it’s a good thing that got fixed by google reader. :)

that color delights eyeshadow is rather old. i remember it was out on the counters in 2004. i had to throw them out after 5 uses, maybe. sorry about your reaction to SPF. it’s a good thing you found a sunscreen (i remember you posted a pic of a neutrogena one) that works for you. i hope there are other sunblocking alternatives that will work for you too. as for me, i stay out of the sun. if i do go to the beach, i have to use very powerful sunscreen or i’d turn as red as a lobster.

your natural lip color is very pretty. :D you’re probably one of the first people i know of with naturally light pink lips. it’s the perfect tint. it’s like a light, rosy pink. :)

the evacuation from the store didn’t last too long. we were standing outside for a good five minutes, then we were told to go back in again. some people were so scared, they rushed to buy their things and made a mad dash home. i know i would go home fast too if i were them.

is TOGO’s like a store or something? i don’t think we have one around here. well, not that i know of anyway. hehe… it sure is funny when people from stores recognize you. thank goodness they don’t know me on a first-name basis…oh, wait. actually, the lady knows my name. she sometimes forgets though. lol.

yup. i agree. nothing wrong at all with living with parents. plus, there’s always company. :D

1272630822 62 Lancôme & Chanel Battle It Out for Best Mascara

It’s the one thing, beauty wise, that I won’t leave the house without and I’ve acquired quite a collection of silver tubes this year.

Dior was my go-to brand before people started sending me tubes of black goop on a weekly basis. It was hard to be adventurous before, because it’s nuts to drop $20 on something you may put on your eyes, hate, and then have to throw away, but now that it’s landing on my desk for free, sure, I’ll give it a shot.

I’ve used five different mascaras in the past five days, and I thought a clear winner had emerged until a last minute contender made for a close tie.

Dior. Dior Iconic was my favorite, before that Dior Show. It’s dramatic, almost clumpy, and I had no problem wearing it during the day and throwing on a few extra coats at night. It’s not the easiest to get off, but a couple of extra swipes of Neutrogena’s eye makeup remover and it’d be gone. Volume won out over length thanks to a super thick brush and it’s almost too heavy to wear on the bottom lash. It’s $27 (but I’m pretty sure it used to be $23).

MAC. I used to use MAC in high school, when they had two mascara options and I balked at $13. The Plush Lash is part of their Tabloid collection and it makes my eyes look like spiders. I should say that I already have pretty thick lashes, so if you need serious help with volume this may be a good bet. I, however, will save it for Halloween.

Estée Lauder. This is the only waterproof mascara I tried, and I should preface this by saying that I hate waterproof mascara. (If I put makeup on, I want to be able to get it off and I probably aged my eyes a year by scrubbing this off.) But it smelled good, and it made my lashes super thick. It’s $19.50.

Chanel. After they sent me a tube of their Inimitable mascara I was hooked. I probably talked about it every day for a week. Then the tube ran out and I went to buy more. When I found out it was going to be $33 with tax I laughed and vowed never to spend that much on mascara. Then I went home and tried out all of these other ones I’m writing about, and went back to buy the Chanel. It’s an obscene amount of money to spend on make-up, but it’s the best mascara I’ve ever used.

*Lancôme. * Chanel’s Inimitable was the best mascara I’d worn up until I bought Lancôme’s High Définicils last night. I ran to Bloomingdale’s after work and the woman behind the counter rolled her eyes, “We’re always sold out of that.” So then I had to have it. Found it at Sephora and pulled out the spiky little rubber wand this morning. My eyelashes are impossibly long. They’re not super thick, but they’re probably more day/80° weather appropriate. It wins, just because I feel better spending $27 instead of $33.

What's hot in beauty

1272628957 57 What's hot in beauty

With hundreds of skin and hair products out there and new ones appearing all the time, how do you choose? Self magazine has taken some of the guesswork out by having a thousand readers test and rate the latest products. Here are this year’s top picks.

Self magazine asked readers to test over a thousand new hair, skin and cosmetic products and rate them based on things like texture, color and ease of use.

“We tested every price range, so it ranges from $2 to $125,” says Self Magazine Beauty Editor Elaine D’Farley.

D’Farley says the winning bath salts by Dr. Dennis Gross are like a smoothie for your skin.  For your face, try Dr. Murad’s facial mask. “The mask contains pomegranate, which is a fruit acid, which will help dissolve debris and clear your pores and make your skin look brighter,” D’Farley says.

Clinique’s Dark Spot Corrector can help too.  If tired eyes are your problem, try Lancome’s eye gel. For bags and wrinkles, try Neutrogena’s anti-aging system.

“It’s a clinical treatment system. There were a lot of kits on the market this year, and what we found is people loved this particular kit because it has everything in it from eye cream to SPF,” says D’Farley.

For makeup, readers like the best brow kit by Clarins and Sephora’s tinted moisturizer.

“I liked that the product dried very smooth and it wasn’t cakey and it just looked very natural and dewy,” tester Katherine Bellando said.

Revlon’s luxurious color eye shadow won for its velvety texture.  For sky-high lashes, the favorite was Wet n’ Wild. And for pink cheeks, Benefit’s Sugar Bomb Blush was the winner.

“And it’s a kaleidoscope of pink and bronze and you swirl it together and you dab it on your cheeks and it looked great on every skin tone,” according to D”Farley.

And you can take it all off with Physicians’ Formula makeup remover towelettes. And for hair, readers liked soy renewal by healthy sexy hair.

The magazine also lists winners for things like lipstick, cleanser and moisturizer. To see the complete list of winners, visit self.com/beauty/2010/05/healthy-beauty-awards

Brian Bailey's beauty bailout

1272619997 83 Brian Bailey's beauty bailout

Brian Bailey wants to give the ladies a break.

“It’s hard for women,” says the Toronto-based fashion designer and Project Runway Canada mentor. “They’re expected to roll out of bed each day to walk the dog, feed the kids, dress and look fabulous before heading out the door for a full day at work. I see them struggle with it all and I thought, you know, I can help.”

The lending hand comes in the form of his new makeup line, Bailey Cosmetics. Launching today on the Shopping Channel, Bailey’s five-piece kit promises to ease a woman’s daily routine by offering put-together polish in less than five minutes.

Bailey’s “five easy pieces” include foundation, concealer, powder blush, eyebrow pencil and lip gloss, all of which are paraben-free and wrapped up in sleek, environmentally friendly packaging. The set sells for $99 during the first month (the price jumps to $129 in May).

“It’s about making it simple,” Bailey says. “There’s so much choice out there. No wonder women often feel confused about how to look their best.”

Kathy McKeil, a marketing expert and a friend of Bailey’s who helped develop the line, calls it an extension of the designer’s effortless and elegant clothes.

“It’s very wearable makeup designed for real women,” she says.

The all-Canadian line took two years to create. It was developed with the collaboration of makeup artist Maryellen Howe and formulated by cosmetic developer Gerald Poirier.

“We took time in developing the formula,” says Poirier, a cosmetics industry veteran. “We wanted to simplify the palette and make it as earthy as possible while at the same time creating a highly efficient product that all women can use.”

The result is a line that is additive- and perfume-free and boasts a neutral colour range designed to accommodate the broad multicultural spectrum of Canadian complexions.

“It’s about celebrating everyone’s natural beauty,” says Howe, who also designed the line’s corresponding collection of luxe goat-hair brushes that help the makeup impart a healthy, natural glow.

“I don’t like the approach that makeup is camouflage. For me, makeup is about embracing the fabulous features that you have,” she adds.

A veteran of Canada’s fashion industry, Bailey says that the public is often sold on fashion as an art of illusion, while in fact it should be about creating a sense of everyday personal style.

“Runway is one thing and reality is another,” says the designer, whose creations are sold through his eponymous retail stores and through the Shopping Channel, a medium he likes for its immediacy and reach.

“The reality is that women want to feel confident about themselves, their clothes and their makeup. They want to feel in control and not overwhelmed,” says Bailey.

“Having dressed them for so many years, I think I know what they want.”

revlon000 Sneak Peek: Revlon innovates in lash category « Cosmetics Magazine

Exclusive first look: Revlon is taking on the lash category in a big way this summer with a product that both conditions and colours in one formula.  It’s called Revlon Grow Luscious by Fabulash and it will start arriving in stores in May. Think of it as a multi-benefit mascara that gives instantly longer, fuller lashes while helping them to grow stronger thanks to a phyto-peptide formula.  The lash enhancement category has been a big seller lately but this product combines the common two-step process into one.

“This was a really big challenge for us,” says Julio Russ, senior vice president of Colour Product Development for Revlon. “Mascaras are one of the most difficult formulas to create since the mix of ingredients has to be perfect. Then, you have to design a brush to perfectly apply the product.  I’m happy to say that this is world class. It’s a cutting edge product.”

The jumbo, oversized brush with lash-enhancing fibers visibly lengthens and plumps lashes while giving you all day wear mascara without flaking. Better yet, each time you apply the mascara, you’re conditioning and treating lash roots encouraging healthier growth.  It’s available in four shades from blackened brown to blackest black in regular. There’s also a waterproof version. Each retails for $9.95 at drugstores and mass retailers across Canada.
